Sustainable Scrubs delivers sustainability to medical uniforms

An Australian-based brand is making waves in the healthcare industry with an innovative line of 100 per cent recycled scrubs for healthcare professionals and other wearers.

Sustainable Scrubs managed to bring to life its vision to challenge the conventional design of medical scrubs while leaving a positive impact on the environment through its proprietary fabric GreenThreads, which is made from recycled polyester derived from plastic bottles and coffee grounds.

GreenThreads has been hailed for being the first of its kind in the industry, driven by the vision of Sustainable Scrubs’s co-founders Nat Lippiatt and Kim Lee to transform ordinary workwear into performance wear that ofers superior style and comfort, whilst also solving an environmental waste issue.

“Our goal is to offer healthcare professionals a product that is both sustainable and comfortable and also provides an opportunity to choose a commodity that is necessary for their jobs,” co-founder and brand & sustainability manager, Nat Lippiatt, said. “Our product is designed to withstand the rigours of the medical industry while promoting environmental responsibility.”

With a strong commitment to sustainability, the scrubs make use of recycled materials, particularly recycled polyester from plastic bottles and coffee grounds, to create its scrubs, while holding up to the comfort test, which is important when working in industries that often have long hours and challenging conditions. They are also hailed for being durable, flexible, and also look modern and appeal across multiple industries.

Outside of manufacturing its scrubs, Sustainable Scrubs has partnered with Australian Post to offset carbon emissions generated during the production and shipping of its products. It has also launched Operation Green Scrubs, a program that enables the company to take back its garments and others at the end of their life and use the fabric to create new items, reducing its environmental footprint and closing the loop on waste.

“Our recycled scrubs are just the beginning of our sustainability journey,” co-founder, scrub designer and senior supply chain manager, Kim Lee, said. “We’re constantly striving to improve our production process and reduce our carbon footprint, because we know that every little step counts towards creating a better future.”
