Three good marketing habits for small-business growth

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

This is true of just about anything, especially marketing.

In the age of Google, there’s an infinite amount of inspiring content waiting to spark motivation. You already know what you should be doing. The real challenge is finding the time to get it done.

What you really need are solid marketing habits to help you remain accountable and consistent, even at the busiest of times. So, here they are.

1. Block out time and be purposeful

Does this sound like you? Social posts going up with knee jerk reactions, endless piles of marketing ideas, to-do lists and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) campaigns because you saw or read something that sounded cool?

This reactivity leads to failed campaigns, and can halt your motivation to keep marketing.

Your audience doesn’t want a constant stream rushed and random marketing. They need marketing with purpose.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. We see it all the time when people start in our small business programs.

Here’s how to get purposeful:

  • Set up your ideal week by blocking out time to work on your business and dedicate one hour a day to your marketing. It won’t always go to plan, but here is a start.
  • Set up a Kanban style project board, fill it with your priorities and tackle them one-by-one. After set up, this could take you as little as two minutes a day to update.

2. Bulk scheduling your social media

Be honest. How often does social posting get pushed to the bottom of your priority list?

We often underestimate how long it takes time to pick an image, write a caption and post. By ignoring social you don’t only miss out on the audience engagement, but you end up beating yourself up for not posting more regularly.

Wouldn’t it feel great to be able to do this with ease and release that mental load?

How to create the habit

Whether it be once a week, or once a month, set aside two-to-three hours for social media scheduling. Spend this time sourcing images or creating them in Canva, writing captions and scheduling using a free tool such as Facebook’s Creator Studio.

3. Commit to two emails a month

Email marketing is a beast to behold. But don’t let that scare you off, on average email still generates $42 for every $1 spent.

It’s easy to get sucked down the rabbit hole of overwhelm, so like social posting, we ask you to set time aside and start small.

Set a realistic target for how many emails you can do a month and stick to it. Consistency really is key here.

How to create the habit

Schedule in three hours per week or fortnight to create or update one email. This could be a campaign or it could be part of an automated sequence. Take to reallygoodemails.com for some killer inspiration!

Don’t stress about keeping up with the Joneses. Stick to these habits and you will build strong foundations that will stand the test of time (aka when you have very limited time!)
