True Green’s web hosting service helping businesses reduce their carbon footprint

True Green is looking to make an impact on the web hosting service scene by being an eco-friendly service that provides Australian small businesses the opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of their online presence.

Founded by Ray Pastoors, True Green utilises energy-efficient locally-based data centres, as well as renewable energy and carbon offsetting solutions.

“Most small-business owners have no idea of the impact their online presence can have on the environment, as it’s so much harder to see,” Pastoors said. “But we know that globally the internet contributes to around two to three per cent of carbon emissions, and this is expected to increase to eight per cent by 2030. If the internet was a country, it would be the world’s sixth-worst polluter.

“The average carbon footprint for an average small business website is 211kg of CO2 a year, the equivalent of around 26,000 smartphones being charged,” Pastoors added. “And that’s for a site following best practice principles, so most sites are even higher.”

True Green says that green web hosting can dramatically reduce any small business’s digital carbon footprint with the added benefit of faster website speeds and round-the-clock support from real humans.

“From overflowing website files to storing every single file forever, small businesses are inadvertently contributing to carbon emissions,” Pastoors explained. “We want to help businesses reduce their impact, and empower them with knowledge – quick fixes like deleting unused files, sizing up your images correctly, and tidying up your website, all help to reduce the amount of energy your website needs to load, improve speed for your visitors and can help reduce your carbon footprint.”

True Green’s web hosting can be used for both new and existing websites and the team manage the entire process of switching from an existing site hosting service to make it an easy change for small-business operators.

As a business on a mission to champion all aspects of sustainability, True Green is also donating one per cent of all revenue to the Solar for Schools program as part of the Its Time Foundation, helping remote schools ditch fossil fuel generators for solar energy.

“Small changes can make a big difference – we’re here to help all Australian businesses reduce their online environmental impact, while also reducing the energy and water consumed by non-green datacentres. It’s a win-win for everyone involved,” Pastoors concluded.
