Handbook on cyber security measures for SMEs and NFPs released

cyber resilient

The Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) have entered into a collaboration with the Australian Information Security Association (AISA) to put together a cyber security guide for small business and not-for-profits.

The Cyber Security Handbook for Small Business and Not-for-Profit Directors has been designed to help SME and NFP leaders build a resilient cyber security strategy in the most straightforward way possible.

“Directors of SMEs and NFPs may understandably be overwhelmed trying to keep up with the ever-shifting cyber threat environment,” AICD Managing Director and CEO, Mark Rigotti, said. “Cyber security is one of the biggest challenges facing organisations of every size, but small organisations face an even greater challenge having to routinely juggle priorities with constrained human and financial resources.”

Rigotto pointed out that the guide is relevant to all entities across the SME and NFP spectrum, irrespective of the nature of their business, and not just those that are directly involved in digital and technology-focused industries.

The key themes the guide covers are:

  • The role of leaders in a heightened cyber threat environment
  • The fundamentals of an effective cyber security strategy
  • The development of internal policies that help create a resilient cyber security culture

Having been designed to offer “clear and concise recommendations for easy implementation”, the guide is complements the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) Essential Eight maturity model and other important advice on cyber security.
