Q&A: Local craftsmanship the secret to Bebo Livings’ luxury curtains

This week’s feature puts the spotlight on Harry Dhanjal, the co-founder of Bebo Living, a family business that specialises in luxury curtains and blinds. Harry is no stranger to entrepreneurship, having previously operated a restaurant, Atta, that specialised in contemporary Indian cuisine. Harry subsequently made the pivot from the hospitality sector to the home interior space with Bebo Living where he is able to showcase his unique tastes and ideas in the design space.

ISB: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

HD: I am a very driven and passionate individual and after working in hospitality for almost a decade, I thought it was important for me to do something great and different in Indian cuisine. At that time, I could not find any restaurant or business that aligned with my vision, that motivated me to start my own business and have greater control over my work and make my passion and vision a reality. After becoming an entrepreneur/restauranteur, it is so rewarding and fulfilling to see people grow around you in your organisation personally and professionally.

ISB: How did you come to the decision to pivot towards luxury curtains and blinds with Bebo Living?

HD: I am very interested in design and use of space, whether it is working in a kitchen composing a dish that not only tastes good but is also palatable to your eyes. After designing Atta and my home, I realised that I have an eye for aesthetics, space and design. To me, composing a dish or designing a house is all about creativity and design, and after my research, I found that not many businesses in window furnishing are targeting the luxury segment, and there is certainly a gap in the market, which inspired me to fill that niche with luxury offerings. The Bebo Living showroom in Middle Park is also designed by me.

ISB: What was the most challenging aspect of making this pivot and how were you able to find success in a new industry?

HD: One of the most challenging aspects of making this pivot was to understand the market and product placement, especially in the luxury segment. Making the right collaborations and business partnerships and making the brand known for its luxury offering. From my learnings running the hospitality business, it was clear that focusing on quality not quantity is pivotal for the business direction and vision; we work on the same philosophy at Bebo Living as well.

ISB: How important is it for Bebo Living to showcase local craftsmanship?

HD: It is incredibly important for us to showcase local craftsmanship as every job is bespoke and customised to the client’s unique needs and requirements. Local craftsmen and craftswomen take pride in their work and are dedicated to producing high-quality products. By collaborating with them, we can ensure that your luxury curtains and blinds are crafted with attention to detail using the finest materials and techniques.

ISB: What is your vision for Bebo Living’s growth in the next couple of years?

HD: Bebo Living would expand its product line to offer a wider range of luxury curtains and blinds as well as complementary home décor items such as cushions, rugs, throws and accessories. One of the things we are passionate about is sustainability and the ethical practices that form our values. We will be looking at investing in eco-friendly materials, reducing waste and collaborating with business partners that share the same value system.

ISB: If you could give one piece of advice to someone who dreams of starting their own business journey, what would it be?

HD: Stay focused on your vision and be true to your passion. Be open to feedback and new ideas and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers and advisors who can offer guidance and encouragement. Above all, believe in yourself and your ability to overcome obstacles and achieve success. With resilience as your foundation, you can weather the storms of entrepreneurship and turn your dreams into reality.
