Online shopping hit an all-time high last month with six million households making online purchases, according to data from Australia Post.

This year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales surpassed last year’s record by 6.6 per cent. About 4.9 million households shopped online during the two-week period which is an increase of four per cent from last year.

One in three parcels processed was bound to NSW, followed by Victoria and Queensland. The postal service also moved 758 tonnes of freight moved by air between November 25 and 28.

Gary Starr, Australia Post’s executive GM for customer and commercial, said delivery teams were well-equipped to meet the increased delivery demands.

“We’re already seeing our biggest Christmas season, however, our customers can be assured that we’ve added more capacity across our workforce, more electric delivery vehicles, delivery days and freighter capacity to manage this increased volume,” Starr said.

Australia Post has also extended retail trading hours in select locations.
