Running your small business with purpose and disruption

disruptors

As someone who has spent many years working in both the community and commercial sectors, I know firsthand the importance of disruption in driving social change.

But disruption alone is not enough – we must also be mindful of the rules and regulations that govern our work and, despite them, find ways to stand tall in our space and lead to better outcomes. You need to be a master of the rules, to find the best way to work around and within them.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years is that whilst disruption can be a powerful tool for change, it must be used carefully and thoughtfully. When we disrupt the status quo, there is risk in upsetting those who benefit from the existing system. Whilst you may be able to see opportunities for growth and success, you still need to be mindful of the rules if you are going to truly lead to a better place.

This is especially true for small businesses that are seeking to disrupt their industry. While it may be tempting to cut corners in the name of innovation, it is important to find ways to disrupt that are both effective and ethical at the same time. Innovation needs to be able to survive to sustain itself. It cannot just be a law unto itself.

We need to find ways to work within the existing system to effect change. If you’re operating in an industry that has outdated regulations or practices, you might work within industry groups or with government agencies to advocate for change. Show how better can be done. Be persistent and consistent and let your voice and actions be heard.

Stand tall in your space. Develop a strong brand identity that reflects your values and mission. Be clear about what you stand for and communicate that message loudly and proudly (and consistently) to your clients and community.

For community organisations, this might mean emphasising your impact. Speak of the positive change you are creating in your community. This may be complex to do. Telling a story can be a challenge. But truth to purpose powers the drive and tenacity which creates that all-important change.

For small commercial businesses, it might mean highlighting your commitment to social responsibility and sustainability. Carve out that uncommon offering that gives you a unique shine.

Regardless of your industry or sector, it’s important to speak truth to your values and purpose, even in the face of opposition and roadblocks. Tell people why you are there. Tell people why you are fighting for change. Tell people why you are different. Take a stand on issues that matter but stay transparent and accountable in your actions to the purpose you espouse.

Ultimately the key to standing tall in your space is to be both purpose-driven and innovative. Being beige simply does not cut it. Disrupting the status quo in ways that are both effective and responsible, and by staying true to your values and mission, you can create real change and make a lasting impact in your industry and community.

The importance of social chance within a disruption message cannot be overstated. Your impact matters when you can be clear that you are making a difference to others.

Here are my top tips for running a small business with purpose:

  1. Prioritise your clients and community. When you’re running a small business, it is easy to get caught up in day-to-day operations and lose sight of your larger purpose. To avoid this, it is important to prioritise your clients and community at every turn and every communication. Why should they care? Be responsive to client needs and desires. Make a stand on making things better for them. Seek out their feedback and input… and participation on the journey.
  2. Embrace innovation and disruption. By identifying unmet needs in your community and developing innovative solutions to meet those needs, you can create real value and make a positive impact.
  3. Stay true to your values and purpose in everything you do, and everything you say. Build trust and credibility by consistently demonstrating that improving outcomes for your clients is what you live for, strive for, and aim for in every action. Building your community around that change creates a lasting impact that extends far beyond your bottom line.
